National service in Singapore

If you are growing up in Singapore, then you know about ns . But what exactly is ns and why is it important so much in Singapore so let’s break it down in  simple words . National service (ns) is very important for Singapore because ns works for protection of the country and Singapore citizens .This  program is mandatory for Singapore citizens and permanent residents once he turns 18 years old.

Journey of NS

you will spend two years as a full time service man . This starts right after you finish school . You will go for basic training where you learn important skills and get physically fit . After two years of basic training you enter the  reservist phase. It means you come back to your normal life but you still need to train for ten years in the Operationally Ready NS (ORNS) program. During this time, they train up to 40 days a year, and their jobs are protected by law while  they are away

Why does Singapore have NS?

Singapore is a small country without any natural reserves. So the people are the great strength of country

  1. The protection of Singapore is the main purpose, with trained people ready to defend the country
and ensure Singapore remains independent and secure.
  2. Singapore is a mix pot of cultures and backgrounds. When young men from different walks of life
serve together, they understand and trust one another, which helps build a strong national identity.
  3. National Service (NS) pushes you out of your comfort zone. You learn discipline, responsibility,
and how to work as a team.
  4. NS is not just about military training. It is about Singaporean citizens taking responsibility for
the country’s future and helping to keep Singapore safe and strong for the next generation.

Central Manpower Base (CMPB)

If you live in Singapore then you know what national service is. It’s something that almost every Singaporean will do. But have you ever had a question in your mind? How does the government know when you should start? How do you decide if you will be in the army, navy or police?

the answer of all these question in one place: the central men power base (CMPB)

What Does the (CMPB) Actually Do?

The work of (CMPB) is to manage the journey of national service man (NS).

Step 1 — Registration Letter

when a person reaches 18. he gets a letter from (CMPB)this letter tells him it’s time to register for ns. the (CMPB) keeps track of everyone, to make sure nothing is left

Step 2 — Medical Check-up

The next step is a medical checkup. The (CMPB) arranges for every enlistee to see a doctor. The doctor checks your health and gives you a PES status. This status determines what kind of physical activities you can do. It’s a safety measure to make sure you are given a job that is right for your health.

Step 3 — Posting Decision

the decision of posting in which the (CMPB) decides who becomes a soldier,  drives and who joins the police? it is not randomly decided. the (CMPB) looks a few important things

  • Your PES status from the medical check-up.
  • Your education and your strengths.
  • The needs of the country.

Step 4 — Reservist Cycle

The (CMPB) is not over after your 2 year training. When you become a reservist, the (CMPB) is still there. Then again send you your reservist letters, telling you when and where to report for training. They keep track of your 10-year reservist cycle to make sure you complete it.

Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)

In simple words , the (SAF) is Singapore’s military. The main job is to protect the country, and its people. It is  like the nation’s guardian, always watching and ready to act if there is ever a threat. Singapore became an independent country in 1965. It was a small and  new nation with very few resources.  Leaders knew that for Singapore to survive and thrive, it needed to be able to defend itself. So, they started  the (SAF) from scratch. It began small but with a big vision: to create a military that was strong, modern, and respected.

Three Parts of the SAF

The (SAF) is not just one big group. It is made up of three main services, each with a special role:

  1. The Army (SAF):
This is the largest part of the SAF. They protect Singapore’s land and are trained in forests,
urban areas, and use tanks, rifles, and advanced technology to defend the country.
  2. The Navy (RSN):
Since Singapore is an island, the Navy protects its surrounding waters. Their ships patrol sea
lanes, keep trade routes safe, and guard against threats from the sea.
  3. The Air Force (RSAF):
These highly trained pilots operate advanced fighter jets and helicopters to protect the nation
24/7. They also support rescue missions and emergency supply transport.

National Service and the Core Strength of SAF

The interesting thing is that making the (SAF) truly is where its people come from. Most of the soldiers, airmen and sailors are not full time soldiers. They are all Singaporeans who take time off from studies or jobs to serve their own country. This system is called national service.

Training and Technology of SAF

A modern nation cannot be protected with basic tools alone. the (SAF) use some of the best technology in the world. they have high tech fighter jets and smart battle system. but the technology is useless without well trained people. (SAF) training is tough and realistic. Soldiers go through large scale exercises, to make sure they are ready for any situation.
